ah, github. that microsoft-owned git hosting service that collects your personal data while pretending to care about privacy.
github has always had a certain degree of dodginess behind it (for example, the harassment allegations that turned out to be true), but in my opinion, it got a whole lot worse after microsoft acquired it, mainly because if a site is owned by microsoft, you just know it's a data collection machine. in addition, two other interesting things happened following microsoft's acquisition: the rename of the "master" branch because the word "master" is "referencing slavery" and the firing of a jewish employee because of his disapproval of the capitol riots. so yeah. both of these events are rather weird, but the second one is just straight up vile.
i recommend sourcehut and codeberg for those who still want to host their git projects online without the need for github. or, if your project is completely free (as in freedom), use savannah.
